Double success in Dubai with the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR

Two wins to start the new year: the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR twice tasted success on the opening race weekend of the new TCR Middle East championship.

The first race in Dubai (UAE) was won by 16-year-old Luca Engstler (D, Liqui Moly Team Engstler) – in his very first touring car race. He was joined on the podium by another Engstler driver in the form of Brandon Gdovic (USA), who finished third. The Golf GTI TCR achieved a top-four shut-out in race two: this time the winner was Gdovic, followed by team-mates Mat’o Homola (SK), Filip Sládecka (SK) and Stefan Goede (D). Luca Engstler came home sixth in this race. The new series now heads to Abu Dhabi (UAE) on 10 February.

FIA World Rallycross Championship
Petter Solberg and Johan Kristoffersson to start in the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar

New dream team in the FIA World Rallycross Championship (WRX): Petter Solberg (N) and Johan Kristoffersson (S) will line up in the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar this year. Supported by Volkswagen Sweden, Solberg’s PSRX team will field two 560-hp WRX Polo at the twelve rounds that make up the 2017 season. Kristoffersson is already familiar with the car, which is developed by Volkswagen Motorsport: last season, the Swede finished runner-up in the World Rallycross Championship with Volkswagen. Solberg, who won the WRX drivers’ title in 2014 and 2015, will be making his competitive debut in the Polo at the opening round of the season in Barcelona (E, 31 March to 2 April).

Global Rallycross
Project title hat-trick: Volkswagen Beetle GRC tested in Phoenix

Here we go again: Andretti Autosport’s preparations for the new season of the Red Bull Global Rallycross (GRC) began with a four-day test in Phoenix, Arizona (USA). Scott Speed (USA) and Tanner Foust (USA) alternated at the wheel of the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. As well as fact-finding set-up drives, the pair also tested new components for the 560-hp Beetle, with which Speed has won the GRC drivers’ title for the past two years, and with which he and Foust claimed the manufacturers’ title for Volkswagen in 2016.
